The Marion VA Health Care System is looking for an Assistant Chief for Medicine Service. The position will be located at the Evansville Health Care Center, Evansville, IN. The physician will split time between administrative duties and direct patient care and will provide Supervision and development of physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants is a critical component of this position. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board certification in specialty area, 5 or more years of clinical experience, 2 or more year of supervisory experience and 2 or more years of VA experience. Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre-employment physical. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. The position will consist of 25% administrative time serving as the on-site supervisor of the medicine service staff at the Evansville Healthcare Center. The remaining 75% of the work week will be spent on the care of outpatients in his/her designated specialty area. Physicians appointed to the Medical Staff of the Marion VA Healthcare System and assigned to the Medicine Service will function as independent licensed practitioners. Clinical Duties:\nAs a specialty trained physician at the Evansville Healthcare Center. The incumbent will spend the entirety of their patient care time in the outpatient setting. The specialist evaluates new patients by performing his/her own comprehensive history, physical examination, and record review, and he/she formulates a diagnostic and management plan. Follow up of established patients will occur at the direction and discretion of the specialist. The specialist may release patients back to the management of their primary care provider when the disease process has stabilized to the point that specialty follow up is no longer required.\nIn addition, the specialist may perform procedures traditionally associated with their specialty based on the physician's training and expertise and the ability of the facility to support the intervention safely and effectively. Administrative Duties:\nThe Assistant Chief Medicine Service will be accountable to the Medicine Service Chief for all professional and administrative activities within Medicine Service including selection and orientation of candidates. The coordination and integration of interdepartmental and intradepartmental services, the implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provisions of services, recommendations for space and other resources needed by the department/service to further the mission of the Marion VA Healthcare System. Other duties will include: Responsible for monitoring the quality of patient care rendered by members of the service at the Evansville Healthcare Center. This includes access, efficiency, effectiveness, and appropriateness of care and treatment for our veterans. Coordinate with Human Resources and Credentialing to ensure timely posting of vacancies and successful on-boarding of selected candidates. Serve on the Professional Standards Board and discuss with the Service Chief any actions needing presentation to, and/or approval by, the Board concerning classification, appointment, clinical privileges, and practice concerns for all staff under his/her supervision. Responsible for the determination of the qualifications and competence of service personnel who provide patient care services under his/her supervision. This will include the assessment of collected performance data to ensure the continuing competence of these individuals. Prepare annual evaluations of the staff under his/her supervision. Conduct mid-year reviews with staff to ensure performance goals and expectations are being met. Coordinate with nursing service to ensure appropriate space and ancillary staff to meet clinical needs of the clinician staff. Monitoring of self and staff for timely completion of consults, notes, and encounters. Adherence to CPRS documentation rules and requirements. Adherence to clinic, and OR, procedures for patient scheduling and access. Approval of timecards and leave for the clinical staff under his/her supervision. Chair meetings and serve as delegate for Medicine Service Chief on various committees as assigned. Assist the Medicine Service Chief in the enforcement of the policies of the Medical Center Bylaws, and Rules and Regulations as outlined by various VHA directives.
