The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) Medicine Service and the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine, Department of Medicine are seeking a full-time staff physician for the Gastroenterology Section. This position is to be based at the NMVAHCS which is currently staffed by five gastroenterologists. Board eligible or certified in Gastroenterology and experience in teaching, patient care, research, and endoscopic procedures are preferred. The UNM GI Division currently has 21 faculty members with active discovery and innovation programs in Informatics and Healthcare Systems, GI Cancers, IBD, GI pathogens, Motility, Hepatology, and Therapeutic Endoscopy. Our Division offers strong collaborative discovery and research opportunities in Medical Informatics with links to Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories and GI Cancers with links to VA Cooperative Studies, the UNM Cancer Center, and the UNM Molecular Medicine Program. The VA Cooperative Studies Program (VACSP) Clinical Research Pharmacy Coordinating Center, a VACSP Biorepository, and the VACSP Site Monitoring and Review Team are also located in Albuquerque. Applicants must be academically qualified for a position at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center. Faculty track and rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Staff Gastroenterologists provide a broad range of Gastroenterology and Hepatology services to Veterans. Each Gastroenterologist functions as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire staff. Clinical duties include but are not limited to: Shares responsibility for inpatient teaching rounds, inpatient consultation, and outpatient clinic. Performs diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures using endoscopes to see internal organs. Access, stabilize, and determine the disposition of patients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy. Supports inpatient Services through consultations and to the Primary Care and Urgent Care Providers via phone, e-consults and outpatient consults. Provides consultation and follow-up through Gastroenterology Virtual Telehealth (CVT) Clinic and communicate with patients directly by phone or through secure messaging via My HealtheVet. Interacts through didactic teaching, demonstration, and observation of performance by Medical Residents and Fellows. Provides knowledge and performance feedback via discussions and written evaluations.
